Moisturizing your skin is an important step in your skincare regimen. Effectively using products with beneficial ingredients will help protect your skin, keep it hydrated, smooth and nourished. But choosing a moisturizer can be challenging: How do you know which is right for you? There are endless brands on the market and all have similar claims and expected results. When it comes to your skin, it’s all about the ingredients. By choosing a moisturizer that has potent active ingredients, your skin can benefit from vitamins and antioxidants that will keep it healthy for the long term. Next time you’re browsing the skincare aisle at your local store, check out these five ingredients your moisturizer must have.

What Ingredients To Look For When Choosing A Moisturizer

People use different kinds of skin care products to achieve different results. This is usually based on their age, skin type, and overall health. However, when choosing a moisturizer there are some ingredients that you can always look for.

Sun Protection

This may be a no-brainer to some, but to others, it may not seem as important as it is. Usually, you put sunscreen on before you head to the beach, a day at the pool,  or if you know you’re going to be spending numerous hours in the sun with little shade for protection. However, people don’t often realize that their skin is exposed to the sun more than they think. UV rays exist throughout the entire year and it’s important we protect ourselves. Getting a moisturizer that has SPF protection is a step in the right direction.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants work together with SPF to help protect your skin from UV rays and other toxins your skin is exposed to on a daily basis (think pollution and allergens like pollen). They help protect the skin from small molecules that disrupt the healthy skin DNA and can often lead to early signs of aging or just plain irritation. When you’re choosing a moisturizer there are a few antioxidants you can look for on the label to make sure your skin will reap the benefits:

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is often listed as tocopherol, tocotrienols, dl-alpha tocopherol, and dl-alpha tocopheryl acetate. Vitamin E is, fat-soluble and helps protect the skin from the negative effects caused by UV rays. Fat solubles help your skin produce healthy cells and absorb the vitamins in which they are apart of. Vitamin E contains antioxidants that everyone needs. These properties help keep the skin looking smooth and youthful.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C can be found on the back of labels listed as L-ascorbic acid, L-ascorbyl palmitate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, sodium ascorbyl phosphate, and tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate. It has many positive effects on your skin: it helps diminish the looks of fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tones, and dull looking skin. Vitamin C has been proven to help the skin last longer, stay hydrated and able to withstand the stresses of everyday environments.

Resveratrol

Another potent antioxidant often found in moisturizers, Resveratrol can be found in red grapes, red wine, nuts, and fruits such as blueberries and cranberries. It helps protects the skin's outer layer and also eliminates the appearances of redness from the skin through its anti-inflammatory properties.

Squalane

Squalane oil is created when squalene oil undergoes hydrogenation processing. The process of hydrogenation is a chemical reaction between molecular hydrogen (H2) and another compound or element. Since Squalene oil comes from plants another element is used to dilute the organic compounds. Once the process is complete and you’re left with Squalane oil, you have a saturated oil that does wonders for your skin. Using this oil keeps your skin super moisturized. Perfect for people with sensitive skin, squalane oil is odorless and colorless and has been proven to be non-irritating. Squalane is a natural antibacterial and also helps protect the skin against premature aging.

Important note: Squalene oil originally came from shark liver oil. However, deriving this oil became endangering and now a plant-based version has become available for the cosmetic industry.

Hyaluronic Acid

This is an ingredient that people already have in their bodies. It is a humectant (to retain or preserve water) that hydrates by drawing water into the outer layers from deep within the skin.  However, as we age the amount of hyaluronic acid we produce starts to diminish. Products that use this ingredient helps consumers achieve a plumper and softer feel to their skin.

Ceramides

Natural fats in the skin’s outer layer, ceramides are a large component of our skin’s structure. People who suffer from dry and flaky skin often have low levels of ceramide levels. This can sometimes lead to other irritations due to lack of moisture in the skin. Look for this ingredient in your moisturizer to maintain your skin’s natural moisture barrier.

Why Ingredients Matter In Your Moisturizer

Having a good skincare regime is a great habit to get into. Younger people tend to not worry too much about anti-aging because on the outer layers of their skin they don’t appear aged. However, it’s always good to understand how everyday life can affect your skin and how using skincare products early on can help protect you from future damage and keep your skin looking healthy and youthful. If you’re a person whose skin has begun the aging process, you can still treat your skin with care. Using products with healthier ingredients will help restore some of the natural elements lost due to aging.  As we age our skin tends to change. it’s a good idea to always know what you’re putting on your skin and what kinds of benefits you’ll receive with ongoing care.
